Taking our first Meet the Member slot of 2024 is trail run leader and exceptional hill runner, Kelly Buckley. Kelly has been running with the Macclesfield Harriers for 9 years. She is lucky enough to live in Rainow and has some great trails on her doorstep. Kelly also enjoys exploring new surroundings and her trainers are an essential when packing for a trip away.
Over to Kelly, to tell us a bit about what running means to her;
Q1: When did you start running?
KB: I played a lot of hockey as a teenager and in my 20’s and used to run just as fitness training. I did a couple of half marathons but it wasn’t until I joined Macclesfield Harriers that I started running more regularly.
Q2: How long have you been a Macclesfield Harrier?
KB: I joined the trail group in 2015. With 2 young children and having returned to work full time, it was great to have a couple of hours out with the lovely group on a Saturday morning, just being active and thinking about something different. I learnt so many new routes in the area, most of which I still using on an almost daily basis, and was also inspired to start doing some races in the area.
Q3: What has been your favourite race and why?
KB: Hard to choose but probably a coastal marathon in Pembrokeshire in 2018. I love running by the sea and the course was quite undulating and varied enough not to get bored but not so ridiculous that I wanted to give up. I was in good company with an old friend also running the half that day, the sun was shining (but not too hot!) and the views were amazing. I was also very happy just to complete the Gritstone Grind this year in tough conditions, thanks to a great running buddy and top support along the way.
Q4: What does running mean to you?
KB: Access to the beautiful great outdoors, peace and quiet, head space, good company and a guilt free slice of cake or extra glass of wine! It’s also a great way to exercise my large and slightly crazy dog.
Q5: Do you have a top tip for other runners?
KB: Always pack your trainers. Whenever I go away for work or with friends and family running gear is in the bag, I’ve had some great runs in random cities and it’s a great way to check out a beach or local landmark before taking the whole family along.
