Wincle Trout Report – Burnt House Farm (14th June 2025)
We were back up at Burnt House Farm this year, which made the yellow weather warnings of thunderstorms and lightening a real concern. The weather gods were on our side and a brief pre-race shower was all that was delivered. The contingency plans were filed away and the race took the standard route. The elevated setting provides spectators with a great view of the competitors as they race along the Dane Valley Way and again, this time silhouetted against the skyline, as they descend the ridge towards Hanging Stone
320 runners lined up for the downhill charge towards the first gate and sharp left turn before spreading out along the 9.5km route (400m of climb), over a mixture of fields, forest track, ridge and moorland, negotiating two river crossings and a scrambling through the chasm of Lud’s Church. The prize for finishers this year was a bottle of beer from Wincle Brewery.
The race was won by James Bannister (Sale Harriers), in 44:42, Simon Harding and Billy Hicks (both Macclesfield Harriers) in second and third.
The Ladies’ race was won by Amelia Padgett, (15th overall 51:17), with Hollie Wall second and fellow Staffs Moorlands runner Kate Davies in third position.
The Ladies’ age group honours went to Hollie Wall (W40), Susan Fourie, Run Free Fell Runners (W50), Carolyn Tregaskis, Rossendale Harriers (W60) and Ann-Marie Jones, Macclesfield Harriers (W70).
The Men’s to Simon Harding, Macclesfield Harriers (M40), Tim Greenald, Altrincham and District (M50), Duncan Cowie (M60) and, well within the top third of the field, Mick Moorhouse, Matlock (M70)
Macclesfield Harriers, had a clean sweep of the team prizes and placed first in Male, Female, Male Vets and Female Vets. Staffordshire Moorlands took second in the Male Open, with Bollington Harriers very close behind.
The Junior race is a 3km route with 2 river crossings and the same brutal finish.
The Juniors were treated to a Tour de France mountain stage style finish, running between the assembled senior runners.
The race was won by Frank White (BU17), in a 12:36. Second home was Oscar Furness (BU15) closely followed by Staffs Moorlands’ Max Tideswell (BU13).
First girl home was Lauren Farr, Staffs Moorlands (GU13) with clubmate Poppy Hadnum in second place (GU13)
Thanks to team behind the Fete, the Wincle Trout committee, the landowners along the route, all the marshals (both local and from Macclesfield Harriers), safety support from Raynet, the first aid team and Buxton Mountain Rescue and generous sponsorship from Wincle Brewery, Topspeed Couriers and Running Bear.
Special thanks to Bryan Dale and Ann Jones for their excellent photos

The 2026 race will be from Mellor Knoll Farm – still uphill at the end but not quite as bad.
