Rainow 5 Fell Race 2024
Feedback from one of the runners sums up this race:
“Thanks to you all at Macc harriers for a great race last night! First time doing it, and can see why people at our club rave over it and come back each year! Great fun, great cake, and great to see so much money raised for v worthwhile local causes. V well organised event, my last min place via si entries waitlist…easy!”
A beautiful evening again in Rainow for this 5-mile friendly fell race (if a little humid for running!). A great start to evening fell races this year, with 272 runners. A massive thank you to my fellow Macclesfield Harriers (all 30 of you thank you!!) as the helpers who made this a super smooth event this year – I realised I took over as race as organiser 10 years ago; my now 13-year old son sorted all the results out for us amazingly this year, and apparently my 11-year old was holding the gate open for all the runners along Kerridge ridge too. My boys tell me they do remember when they were tiny and were left at home with their Grandparents to stay up to watch the runners racing along the ridge as the start (at 7:30pm) was too close to bedtime to be out!
We had a large contingent of Macclesfield Harriers racing (46), 11 from Bollington Harriers as well as 34 visitors from Chorlton and welcoming 18 from Levenshulme Runners too (we liked their maroon vests!).
Eammon Clowes (Newcastle (Staffs) Tri Club) was first home in 33:05 (also MU23) and the first lady was Holly Wall (Staffs Moorlands AC) in 39:50.
Macclesfield Harriers again claimed both the men’s and the ladies’ team prizes (Nathanael Booker, Michael Wood, Alex Galloway, Mark Walker and Rachel Hall, Kristy Gill , Angela Markley).
Again we had both male and female V70s finish this race – inspiration for us all! (Mick Moorhouse MV70 in 48:38; Margaret Huyton FV70 58:38). In total there were 6 V70s this year, and 7 U23s – as well as plenty in-between.
Big thank you to Red Willow Brewery and to Running Bear for donating our individual and team prizes. There was a great post-race atmosphere with an amazing array of cakes from the Rainow Pre-School Parents! From entrance fees as well as fantastic cakes, the race raised a total of over £2,550.
On the night donations were presented to representatives from local charities/organisations: £500 to KRIV who are repairing the footpath along Kerridge the race goes along, £500 for emergency pot-hole repairs in the Rainow village (church) car park and £500 to Buxton Mountain Rescue who are our local rescue team (thankfully not required for the race). Additionally, donations were also made to the Rainow Village institute (£200), and with a small donation from entry fees and the fantastic the cake-sale, an amazing total of £850 was raised for Rainow Pre-School.
