Meet the Member – Rob Whitby

Posted on 02/03/2023

Introducing Macclesfield Harrier, Rob Whitby. You may know Rob, as ‘Rob the Barber’ – he’s been described as ‘a quality barber with a passion and dedication to the haircutting profession.’ Rob has recently set up his own barber shop on Park Lane, Silktown Barbers. When he is not busy making the men of Macclesfield presentable, Rob’s other passions are spending time with his family and running.

Rob recently won the Boalloy Bypass 10K race, in an incredible time of 35:01 and is currently marathon training. Rob kindly set aside some time to tell us a bit about what running means to him;

Q1: When did you start running?

RW: I used to run at school, for the athletics and cross-country teams. I started running again in 2011, when I was 22. I ran the Potters ‘Arf marathon in 1:54:13. From then on, I used to take up running in the summer to keep fit out of the football season.

Q2: How long have you been a Macclesfield Harrier?

RW: I joined approximately 10 years ago.

Q3: What has been your favourite race and why?

RW: Wilmslow Half in 2021. The training had gone very well and I felt fit. I remember running the race at a good pace and getting towards the end and still feeling strong. I was able to kick on and get a PB.

Q4: What does running mean to you?

RW: Running for me has become a vital part of life, it gives me everything. Keeps me fit, helps relieve stresses, gives me focus and the racing pushes me and brings out my competitive side. I also get the added benefit of exploring the local area.

Q5: Do you have a top tip for other runners?

RW: Well I’ve got a lot of ‘what not to do’ from past experiences! A tip which was given to me and helped me improve a lot was to slow down, it meant I ran more and enjoyed it more.

Q6: What’s your favourite running memory?

RW: The Manchester marathon finishing straight. I managed to pick my wife and daughter out in the crowd cheering me on.

Q7: Anything you would like to add?

RW: Being a member of the Harriers has introduced me to so many great people. I am grateful to everyone who puts their time and effort in to making it such fantastic club.
