Twelve Macclesfield Harriers made the trip to Chester for the first mid-week evening fixture of the year. Luckily, the torrential downpours of the previous two days stopped a few hours before the race leading to a mild evening and almost perfect conditions as we raced off into the sunset.
This race is known for its blisteringly quick starts and its difficult finishes as the first half of the course is almost entirely downhill. When it comes to racing, what goes down must always come back up! Alongside the course’s usual topographical challenges, we also had to cross large puddles of standing water. Despite one club member stating that the puddles were ‘more like rivers’, it appears that most racers took these unexpected obstacles in their stride!
There were fantastic individual and team performances. Faye Sharpley was the quickest female Harrier with Sue Stockdale 2nd and Helen Eddie 3rd. On the men’s side, we had a father-son 1-2 with Mark Walker the fastest male Harrier, Matthew Walker 2nd and Ewan Edmondson 3rd. Mark (V45) and Matthew (U20) also finished second in their respective age categories, while Matt Lynas (V55) came first in his! These wonderful individual performances also meant that the men’s team (Mark Walker, Matthew Walker, Ewan Edmondson, Matt Lynas) finished the night as the second-best team, missing out on first place by only a few points. Congratulations to all!
