CYBI Coastal Trail Marathon 2022 – Report

This scenic and challenging trail race attracted 23 Macc Harriers (plus lots of supporters) to make the journey across to Holyhead. The logistics were varied (there and back in a day, make a weekend of it, have a holiday) and the weather and scenery made the effort worthwhile (if anything it was a bit too warm as the sunburn demonstrated at the end).

This event is a small (200 entries) community event which raises funds for the local RNLI – it is very environmentally friendly (no cups, medals hand-made from driftwood). After a comprehensive safety briefing everybody set off from a 10.00am mass start. There are lots of pictures at the bottom of this article (apologies if people are missed).

The route is a clockwise coastal circuit of Holy Island (Ynys Gybi) and is a wonderful mix of field paths, coastal paths and rocky mountain paths …. Some bits are quite technical (almost half of the harriers took a stumble or tumble and have battle scars to prove it). The views on from the high points are superb. There were lots of club members (and family members) supporting all around the course which really helped.

All 23 harriers completed the course with Helen Saunders first harrier and Barry Dillon second harrier to finish.  In the full results Lisa Cox was the first FV50 and Neil Gunn first MV60. The finish times of the harriers is shown in the table below. (FULL RESULTS)

The finish area was like a street party with lots of beer and cake – the atmosphere was super and the runners almost forgot the aching limbs!

If you are prepared to train and not put off by a 26.2 mile challenge then look out for the 2023 event when entries open.
