Four races took place during a warm June (and start of July), and the competition between our members has really started to heat up! Read on to learn how performances at the Dave Telford Dunham Massey 5k, Colshaw Hall 10k, Round the Runway 5M, and Summer Road Handicap have affected our Road Running Club Championship!
Dave Telford Dunham Massey 5k
This speedy 5k takes place in the grounds of the National Trust’s Dunham Massey property. The race starts at the far end of the drive and runners head towards the main house before completing two loops of the ground and finishing directly in front of the house. There was extra excitement this year as a herd of deer decided to gallop across the course just as the race was starting!
The strength of our club and the fine margins in the battle for places in the Road Running Club Championship were put into focus at this race as just two minutes and 10 seconds separated our second and thirteenth-placed finishers!
Rob Whitby completed the race in a time of 17:10. He was so quick that some of our other members weren’t even sure he had attended until they saw the results! Rob Gorton and Peter Taylor were neck and neck for most of the race before Rob Gorton threw down an impressive sprint finish to become the second Harrier across the line in a time of 19:38, nine seconds ahead of Pete Taylor in 19:47. Impressively, this was only Rob Gorton’s second time breaking the 20-minute barrier!
Our fastest lady was Kristy Thorp, sneaking in ahead of the 20-minute mark to finish in a time of 19:58. Sue Stockdale in 22:10 and Jill Abbott in 26:36 were our second and third ladies, respectively. Kristy Thorp was second FV50 while Jill Abbott was first FV60!

Round the Runway 5 Miles
24 of our members took part in this year’s edition of the Round the Runway 5M. After a warm, dry week, the rainfall experienced on race day provided relief from the heat but also ensured that the off-road section towards the tunnel would become very slippery!
Fin Pettie was the fastest Harrier, finishing in 8th place overall in a time of 28:13, just 2 places and 10 seconds ahead of Rob Whitby (28.23). Zach Holmes was the third harrier to finish, completing the course in 31:22.
Kristy Thorp was our fastest lady, finishing in a time of 34:14. She was followed by Angela Markley in 35:03 and Jo Miles in 41:49.
There were also some great age grade results. Jim Pendrill and Harry Newton were 1st MV55 and MV85, respectively; Kristy Thorp and Jo Miles were second FV50 and FV60, respectively; and Angela Markley and Julian Brown were third FV45 and MV60, respectively.

Summer Road Handicap
On the evening of Monday July 6th there were 11 runners who took on the challenge of trying to predict their time for a 7.5K route from the track without the use of any electronic tracking devices. The warm and humid evening meant that the main strategy most people took was to put down an easy time to try to hit, but even that strategy proved hard for some. In the end it was Mike Kemp, with his last minute predicted time change and his sprint finish, who took the top spot being just 17 seconds off his predicted time.
| Name | Seconds away from predicted time |
| Mike Kemp | 17 |
| Keith Mulholland | 37 |
| Dave Chambers | 39 |
| Duncan James | 43 |
| Ian Humphries | 50 |
| Rob Gorton | 72 |
| Matthew Walker | 80 |
| Nathanael Booker | 94 |
