On 21st March, Jake Ireland proudly represented England at the Schools International Athletic Board (SIAB) Cross Country Championships in Bangor, Wales, following his qualification as the sixth English representative at the English Schools Championships the previous week.
Jake approached SIAB with renewed determination and a clear desire to improve his positioning and make a strong statement on the international stage. Travelling to Wales on the Friday, he joined his England teammates for an overnight stay, benefiting from a supportive team environment and camaraderie.
Race day on Saturday was a warm, sunny day. The course was challenging yet scenic set in the Welsh countryside at the Faenol Estate. Athletes faced four laps of an undulating 1,500m loop, creating a demanding 6km route. After walking the course and completing his warm-up, Jake lined up ready to compete against the best young athletes from across the home nations.
Jake executed his race plan with composure, starting conservatively before steadily working his way through the field. By the end of the first lap, he had moved into second place behind a Welsh athlete who had set a fast early pace. Seizing the moment, Jake surged into the lead on the following lap, increasing the tempo and asserting control of the race.
He was soon joined by his England teammate Fin and a strong Irish competitor, with the trio running shoulder-to-shoulder for the next two laps. The race became increasingly tactical, with close positioning and physical jostling as each athlete fought for advantage.
Entering the final lap, Jake briefly lost ground as his rivals pushed ahead. Feeling the effects of the demanding pace, he dug deep to maintain contact. With approximately 500 metres remaining, Jake produced a decisive surge, overtaking the Irish athlete and breaking clear. Demonstrating remarkable strength and determination, he powered through to the finish to secure a hard-earned victory, his first individual international win.
Jake’s success was complemented by an outstanding team performance, with England athletes occupying the top three positions overall. This dominant display ensured that Team England also claimed the first-place team prize.
Jake would like to thank his coaches Alison Hartopp and Bev Hartigan for their excellent support, advice and guidance throughout the cross country season.
