Manchester Half Marathon 2016 race report

For the first running of the Manchester Half Marathon, 8500 runners took to the flat streets around Old Trafford for what promised to be a fast 13.1 miles. While the weather was not ideal, with heavy rain coinciding with the start of the race, 7 Macc Harriers battled with the conditions and the course for some fine performances.

Billy Hicks led the male Harriers with a PB of 1:23:15 despite the conditions. Ray O’Keefe was the second male Harrier (1:33:07) followed by Philip Nieman (1:38:16) the third male Harrier over the line. Matthew Wilson (1:59:36) was the next male Harrier followed by Andy Devine, who ran a PB of 2:01:45, beating his PB of just a few weeks ago at the Congleton Half.

Helen Gowin led the female Harriers with a PB of 1:55:10. Dawn Devine was the second female Harrier and also ran a PB with a time of 2:07:09.

Under 15 Girls

Macclesfield Harriers moved from third to first on last leg to claim the Under 15 girls title.

Sian Heslop (13:54) and Lauren Robinson (14:53) saw the club lying in the bronze medal positions at the end of two legs but the third Pauline Lynch coached athlete, Stephanie Moss, then produced a 14:03 last leg to take them through to gold medals.

Blackheath and Bromley also moved through – having been 11th after Lia Radus’s opener they went fourth with Morgan Squibb’s (Andy Frankish) second leg before Sophie Hoare (Phillip Kissi) unleashed the second fastest leg of the day to anchor them to silver medals. City of Norwich completed the medallists with Katie Goldsmith, Emma Hunter and Femke Rosbergen (all Dave Pring) progressing from 13th to sixth then third at the end of each athlete’s leg.

It was Kettering Town Harriers’ Emily Williams (Shane Smith) who was fastest of the day with 13:40 on first leg.

Macc Half, 5k & Fun Run - thanks to all the volunteers

A huge thank you to all the Macclesfield Harriers’ volunteers who helped make the 2016 Macclesfield Half Marathon such a big success on Sunday, it is you that make this such a special event. It was a bit damp out on the course at times and no runners overheated this year. The feedback has been brilliant from runners and spectators alike and Macclesfield Harriers can be very proud to be the driving force behind one of the biggest events in the town. We had over 560 finishers in the Half Marathon, a record 221 in the 5K and a record 90 youngsters in the fun-run. The Pace-Runners were bang on schedule and many PB’s ensued.  A full race report is attached and more details can be found on the website and loads of pictures on the club Facebook Page.
