Fell running taster session - 30th April 2017

This next session will run form 0945 to 1145, starting at Macclesfield Forest Visitor Centre, Trentabank.

In this session we will be re-capping kit selection, safety considerations, uphill and downhill running techniques, and applying those to different types of terrain covered on the first session.

The minimum age is 12 and all juniors under 18 must have a signed consent form given to Shaun Wilde (Session Leader) by the parent or guardian. The parent or guardian can optionally attend the session.

The kit requirement is:

  • Training shoes (ideally studded fell shoes)
  • Running socks
  • Running tights or shorts
  • Long sleeve wicking base layer
  • Mid layer or additional t-shirt (optional)
  • Breathable waterproof jacket (to be used or carried dependent on the weather)
  • Running gloves and hat/buff (to be used or carried dependent on the weather)
  • Small running bag to carry jacket, gloves and hat/buff (weather dependent)
  • A change of clothes, a towel and filled water bottle (to be kept at the start location)
  • It is also recommended to have an energy based snack for after the session

Anyone who wishes (parent and guardians email on behalf of their juniors) to attend please email Shaun Wilde at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. so that we can manage the numbers and have the appropriate numbers of helpers on the day.

Wednesday night summer fell race series 2017

The first race is nearly upon us. Herod Farm starts with a tough longish climb down and around a steeper shorter climb (save some for this) and a blast downhill back to the start point. It’s just 3 mile so 14 to 17 year old's can enter but need parents/guardians to sign consent on the entry form on the night.

New intermediate fell-running group

Shaun Wilde will be shortly running three fell taster sessions for Macclesfield Harriers. Please see Shaun's earlier postings on the club website and Facebook for details. To compliment these sessions an intermediate fell group will be going out for several weeks on a Wednesday at 19.00 hrs. It will be a separate group from the regular Wednesday night group, but will be fully supported by the minimum of 3 experienced runners.

The dates and locations are as follows:

  • 5/4 - Trentabank car park, Macclesfield Forest
  • 12/4 - Poachers, Bollington
  • 19/4 - Quarry car park, Hayfield *
  • 26/4 - Stanley Arms, Wildboarclough
  • 3/5 - No run, but we will help out at the Rainow 5 fell race and see what goes on at a race *
  • 10/5 - Cragg Inn, Wildboarclough
  • 17/5 - Errwood Reservoir Car Park (SK 014 756)

* club championship races.

All runs will be approximately 1 1/4 hrs and we will try to touch on areas covered in the taster sessions. Please try to car share.

It is the usual practise after a Wednesday night run to retire to a nearby pub and discuss all things to do with fell. This is a good way to get to know other club members, whom you may have never seen before.

Your usual running attire will suffice, but I strongly recommend to bring waterproofs, hat, gloves and maybe a head touch for the first couple of runs. It goes without saying that road shoes will not do the job. If you don't want to break the bank or you are uncertain if fell running is for you, then I can recommend Moremile Cheviot 3s. At ÂŁ30.00 a bargain for a reasonable starter or training shoe.

At the end of the several nights out we can sit down and discuss "where to go next". Some suggestions are the excellent Staffordshire Moorland Summer Series, the club championship races or maybe move up and go out with the regular group on Wednesday nights.

If there are any of our regular fell runners who would like to help out at any of the above nights, could you please let us know which ones and in what capacity - lead, support or backmarker.

Julie Gardner and Graham Brown, club fell captains.
